Local Food on the Plaza??!!!

I'm so excited!! I got my Plaza newsletter in my inbox today, and there's a short write up about a new eatery coming to the Plaza. It's called Ingredient and it's a locally-owned, small chain of restaurants that specializes in salads, sandwiches, small pizzas, that kind of thing. The idea is they offer a huge variety of ingredients and then you pick and choose what you want in your salad or pizza, etc. I've eaten at the Lawrence location twice and both times the food was amazing, and it's also reasonably priced. Their Plaza location will be near reVerse, and they're suppose to open in the fall... I can't wait!!

Push Vs. Pull Mobile Marketing

The great Orwellian fear that quaked us in our boots a few years ago was that world where businesses would be able to jingle our phones whenever we were nearby, prompting sales and whatnot.

Can you imagine walking down 47th Street on the Country Club Plaza if this was the case?

BZZZZ! Half off a book at Barnes!
BZZZZ! Free appetizer at 810!
BZZZZ! 10% off at Pottery Barn!
BZZZZ! Free socks with $20 purchase at GAP!

And... this would happen in a mere half-block! Oh, the HORROR!

So when I stumbled on the advertisement that has been placed on the Armani storefront, I was glad that someone had figured out how to take advantage of the constant foot traffic that walks along 47th. As you can see in the picture (above) they are giving you $10 off any purchase.

The response to the text says:
"Take $10 OFF any purchase, ends 3/15/09. Show txt instore or use AX10DL @ armaniexchange.com. 1 use p/day. Exclusions apply. Fwd it on!"
I find it to be a clever use of the advertising medium. You can walk in now or go online later. You also have the ability to send it to a friend... because they've given you options on how you can use it, they are more apt to give you a positive experience, which may lead to you actually passing it along to a friend!

Dig it, Armani!

To Cross Or Not To Cross

The debate about whether 47th Street on the Country Club Plaza rages on... are drivers creating an unsafe environment for the pedestrians on the Plaza?

In a recent letter to KansasCity.com, a writer states:
"Those of us who live in the Country Club Plaza neighborhood witness incidents like mine frequently. Drivers are oblivious to pedestrians trying to cross the street in a crosswalk. Many of us have begged Plaza management, the city and the Police Department to make crosswalks more visible to drivers by striping them, adding signs, giving tickets or even lowering the speed limit."
IMHO, both drivers and pedestrians need to take some responsibility. I've lived on the Plaza for four months now and I regularly--almost daily--walk down to the local coffee shop to work on the book that I'm writing. I often end up standing in the middle of the street trying to make eye contact with the car that is approaching the crosswalk. I've even bitched about crossing 47th.

BUT, THIS IS MY CHOICE.

PEDESTRIANS: If you think it's dangerous to cross at intersections that don't have a stoplight, then walk an extra block or two to 47th & Jefferson or 47th & Wornall/Broadway where the traffic lights will stop traffic for you. Problem solved.

DRIVERS: Just be a bit more aware that the Plaza is a highly foot-trafficked location and slow down. Problem solved.

Spending money on lights and signs to make drivers more aware of the crosswalks seems plain silly. Why do we always think that we should fix things with more signage... don't you see enough of it in your day? Isn't there so much of it that it all gets lost in the mix anyhow?

When I'm in a crosswalk, this is what I do... I make eye contact until a driver comes to a stop and while I'm crossing the road, I give them a smile and a wave. Last week, I even did a goofy pose for a picture while a woman leaned out of her window to snap a photo.

Instead of introducing more signage, make someone smile and they'll be much more likely to remember that there are pedestrians walking around the Plaza!

If you really want to get serious, then organize your own fun weekend campaign where we gather to cross the street and we laugh and sing and smile and carry big signs that say, "Remember that people walk these streets, too!"

Actions speak louder than words.

Plaza Redbox: A Sticky Mess

This is not a photo of the DVD that I got out of the Country Club Plaza McDonald's Redbox location yesterday... I totally should've taken a photo of it, but it didn't dawn on me to do so. Sawry.

The one that I got out of that machine was nasty. It had soda spilled on it and the hinge of the jewelcase was in need of a major dose of WD-40. Straight nasty.

To top it all off, the movie ("Hancock") went batty after about 20 minutes of viewing and it never recovered all the way to the end, despite a healthy cleaning. There was no chapter that you could skip to that wasn't pixelated and down with a bad case of the movie hiccups.

Redbox on the Plaza. FAIL.

I sent them a support email, we'll see how that goes.

UPDATE: They sent me an email in reply with a promo code for a free rental.

Results from the Drink, Eat, Shop Question

Thanks for the feedback, Tweeps (follow @plazabuzz to be part of the next question)!

What do you do the most when you come the Country Club Plaza: drink, eat or shop?
  • @secamode says, "Eat at Eden Alley!"
  • @tessk says, "I shop a lot less since they took away my fave store from the plaza. RIP Casual Corner.... RIP!"
  • @kaitlin862 says, "I would have to say shop but that eating is a close second."
  • @the_glendon says, "You forgot 'people watch.' Cause I'm going with that."
  • @tessk felt strong enough to answer TWICE, "Drink, shop, eat (would eat more if they had more local, less chains)!"
  • @mortimas says, "I watch girls... unless my wife is reading my tweets, then I'm kidding."
  • @ca_rose says, "Shop, followed closely by eat/drink."
Hardly statistical significance here, but enough to determine that the Plaza is all about the TOTAL DRINKEATSHOPPEOPLEWATCH Experience. If you'd like to shorten that phenomenon, then you can call it the TDESPW Experience. Word.

Been Around the World and I-I-I...

Okay, I've seen many a fantastic street drum crew in Chicago, San Francisco, New York City... and I've been asking for "entertaining street performers" on the Plaza for those are the only type that I'll consider for contribution.

But, these drummers at Posthuman Blues don't do much for me.

NOISE.

What do you think PlazaBUZZ peeps?

[Thanks TKC for pointing out this post!]

The Great Plaza Debate

It's been a topic of conversation in the past, but with so many more PlazaBUZZ followers, perhaps we should revisit the topic. The great tradition of the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City has always been one of preeminence when it comes to shopping and entertainment. It is a bastion of Kansas City culture.

And yet, there is a debate about the type of businesses that should be here.

On one hand, you have the residents on or near the Plaza. Few of us want to see more national brands, for we know that we can get them at Town Center or Zona Rosa or any number of other locations (or, for that matter, any other city). Do we really need another national restaurant chain or a Forever 21? We want local flavor.

On the other hand, the managing entity of the Plaza claims that the tourists that visit want to shop at the national brands. And, since the tourists, they say, spend more money on the Plaza than the residents, the tourists are the reason that we have a Cheesecake, Fogo, PF, Coach, et al.

So, BUZZers, what say you? I've added a poll on the right side of the page for your votes. Feel free to comment below!

Oh, what it was like to be young...

Houston's? Of all places, Houston's? I stumbled across a young writer's romanticized visit to Houston's on the Country Club Plaza this morning (read her Random Ramblings here).
"As we walked into the dimly lit restaurant (Houston's), we were greeted by a woman dressed all in black who led us to our table. The table which we sat at was candlelit, creating an atmosphere that gives you instant goose bumps if you have a flair for the dramatic. After our orders were taken I took a better look around, breathing in my surroundings. I peered over the tables next to us, trying to catch glimpses of the busy kitchen. I heard pots clanging merrily and shouts from various people in the steaming room."
Girl, you know there are 13 Houston's in the country, right? The last time I was in there, the food was raw (when it wasn't supposed to be), the first wine I ordered was out of stock, the second wine I ordered was horrid (my bad) and the fries were over-salted. I must, however, pull my punches a little bit, friends were recently in Houston's and said it's much improved from our previous visit.

I love your innocence, but you were SO CLOSE to good food; if you just would have gone to The Classic Cup right across the street!

There is a battle on the Plaza between the tourists and the residents. We residents want local fair, while the tourists always want to eat at the chains: Houston's, Cheesecake, PF's, Fogo... next time go local!

810's Weekly Sports Flop

It astounds me every single week how much 810, self-proclaimed sports bar, irritates the hell out of those that come in to watch the games. I've ranted about a similar instance before which you can read here. This weekend totally took the cake...

It started well when I walked in a little bit before noon with all of the games already slotted into the televisions. The first set of games went well and then the insanity started.

For a full half-quarter, none of the 3pm games were being broadcast on any TV anywhere in the bar. Half of the TVs were blank, in fact. There were 5 games in action.

One of the larger big screens is split into four games. I lost count after those 4 games being shown had been moved around 8 times in 30 minutes. For most of that time, there were duplicate games being shown on the big screen. They never broadcast the Falcons/Vikings game on any screen the entire afternoon. When I asked for a TV somewhere to be changed to the Falcons game my server said that her manager was TOO BUSY to make the change (The place was maybe 33% full).

When I asked again and complained about all of the games being moved from TV to TV, my server said that she would have a manager come talk to me and we could figure it out.

NO MANAGER EVER CAME TO CHAT WITH ME.

To top it all off, three of the five afternoon games came down to the last few minutes... the Eagles/Skins, Broncos/Bills and Falcons/Vikings... when those games where in the throes of outcome, they flipped the big screen from a four game split screen to a single game forcing everyone to frantically look for the other games elsewhere. Fortunately, I had the Falcons on my table TV so I only had to search for the Broncos on another TV.

810 absolutely blows as a sports bar. I've been to many in my life and it is absolutely the worst one that I've ever attended.

EVER.

Why Can't I (S)wipe at My Table?

I'm sure y'all heard about the waiter on the Plaza (Brio -- Oooo, That Smell!) let was convicted of credit card theft last week. If not, kansascity.com reports...
"John David Woody, 34, appeared in federal court Thursday on an indictment that a grand jury returned in secret on Nov. 18."

"Prosecutors alleged that while working at the Brio Tuscan Grille in July and August, Woody recorded the names and credit card numbers of five restaurant customers. He then used that information to purchase goods on the Internet, including thousands of dollars worth of DVD boxed sets."
Now America, in other parts of the world they bring the swipey credit card machine thingy to your table so that the card never leaves your sight. We're a country of innovators and we can't prevent this simple crime?

Funny what things we overly-control and what things we don't, ya know?

West Plaza Bernstein Project Update

More info on the construction dealio on the Plaza West side... whatcha gonna get?

From GlobeSt.com's Robert Carr:

Bernstein says, "'My sons and daughters are starting to take over the business, and I want to have a legacy building, something that everyone in the area will be proud of,' he says."

This, my friends, is what will make them proud...
  • 205,000 sq ft of office space
  • 131 hotel rooms
  • 6 levels of underground parking (1000 spaces)
  • 9000 sqft restaurant
  • 12,000 sqft advertising museum
  • 270 seat theater
  • Bernstein offspring & their ad agency
  • TBD retail
That's kinda hot. We should have all of this by the Fall of '09 if work begins this week or next as stated in a PlazaBUZZ post last week (oddly enough, I never gave the FREE used ear plug away). I'm all tingly inside.

Any bets on whether any of this stuff will be local retail? I thought not.

Fogo Almost Go Go!

Fogo de Chao has been under construction on the Country Club Plaza for quite some time (47th & Seville Way across from Houston's), but they've recently removed the big 10' walls surrounding the building.

From their web site:
Welcome to Fogo de Chão (fo-go dèe shoun), a dining experience like no other. Sit back, relax and enjoy the truly unique steakhouse atmosphere from Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil.

Our featured meats are seasoned to perfection and slow-roasted over an open flame to capture their individual flavor. The savory cuts are presented on skewers and carved tableside by our authentic Gaúcho chefs, at the guests' request.

Sounds absolutely yummy and heart-stopping. Will keep you posted on progress!

All Hatfield, No McCoy

Went down to the Country Club Plaza Barnes & Noble this evening to listen to Juliana Hatfield read a few excerpts from her book and play a few songs. There was a nice crowd in the Starbuck's cafe... numbered about 50 strong sitting and standing.

This event was actually the first music event that this store has conducted. Practically everyone in attendance got in line for autographs after she finished. Let's hope that more music is in store for the future.

Juliana herself seemed quite timid... very soft-spoken. I wasn't too impressed with the excerpts that she read for they seemed rather shallow. However, hearing a few acoustic songs, such as "My Sister" was good medicine for I wasn't feeling all that well.

WE ARE MARSHALL (MO)!

Looks like we need to take a road trip to Marshall, MO!

From the Marshall-Democrat News' Sydney Stonner, Mayor Stephen Allegri said the town's recent turkey giveaway and tree-lighting ceremony was a great success, with at least 250 people in attendance.

"Downtown looks great," he said, "like the Country Club Plaza."

Whoaaaaaaaaa, Nelly. Really? Props to you, Mayor Allegri!
